2021 Fresh Scientist for NSW

Dr Chi Yhun Lo has been announced as a 2021 Fresh Scientist for NSW. Chi is Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Australian Institute of Health Innovation, an Adjunct Fellow at Macquarie University, the Secretary of the Parents of Deaf Children, and the co-founder of the Hearing Hub Junior Science Camp for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Children. Chi has a passion that intersects hearing, deafness, health, music, and community.

Science in Public has run Fresh Science for 22 years with the belief that science can change the world. Fresh Science is an annual competition that supports researchers with discoveries, helps them find the key, compelling story in their research and then puts them in the spotlight, showcasing them to the public and the media.

“Being nominated as a Fresh Scientist is a fantastic opportunity to help dispel some common myths about music and deafness. Music is enjoyed by most of us, but it also has some specific benefits for deaf and hard-of-hearing children and adults that are often overlooked. I’m looking forward to sharing this with the community and highlighting that deafness is not a barrier to music participation.”
