Announcing the Phonak-Macquarie-NAL Alliance on hearing research and innovation to improve the uptake and benefit to listeners of hearing-aid technologies

Macquarie University and The National Acoustic Laboratories (NAL) are delighted to announce the formation of the Phonak-Macquarie-NAL Alliance. This unique three-way, multi-year research partnership, funded by Phonak, a global provider of hearing solutions and part of the Sonova Group, unites Phonak’s expertise in hearing-aid innovation with the research strengths and translational power of Macquarie University Hearing and NAL, with activities centred at the Australian Hearing Hub. The Alliance will enable Phonak, Macquarie University and NAL to collaborate in unique ways on research and innovation initiatives—beyond standard industry-sponsored projects – to improve the uptake and benefit to listeners of hearing-aid technologies.

Says Brent Edwards, Director of NAL, “This Alliance is a powerful new way for three organisations with world-leading hearing research to work together to increase the impact that our research can have on hearing healthcare. I am excited about what we will be able to accomplish working as one and how we can change the world together.”

Professor David McAlpine, Academic Director of Macquarie University Hearing, says, “I am delighted with the establishment of the Alliance. Macquarie and NAL have been working ever closer since the Australian Hearing Hub was founded. The Hub’s ability to bring people and expertise together was key to Phonak seeking to secure this Alliance, one with the potential to make a real difference to the lives of the hearing impaired.”

“Within this alliance we will bring together expertise from different leading organizations in the field of hearing science and hearing care to address innovative topics in perception and hearing rehabilitation in a very interdisciplinary approach,” says Prof. Prof Dr Stefan Launer, Senior VP of Audiology and Health Innovation at Sonova.
