The new ARC Linkage Project ‘Beyond Speech: Roads to Effective Communication’ officially started on 8 August. The project is led by Macquarie University, Child Lab Director, Distinguished Professor Katherine Demuth and Associate Professor Mridula Sharma, along with partners at Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children (Professor Greg Leigh and Ms Inge Kaltenbrunn), The Shepherd Centre (Ms Aleisha Davis), Hearing Australia (Ms Alison King), Cochlear (Dr Mary Beth Brinson), and Parents of Deaf Children (Dr Chi Lo).
The project aims to understand the locus of the communicative challenges children with hearing loss face in their daily interactions and will inform future interventions to reduce children’s listening effort, leading to more effective communication.
