To celebrate Hearing Awareness Week, Macquarie University Hospital in collaboration with the Australian Hearing Hub organised a hearing healthcare GP education seminar.
30 GP’s attended this interactive educational seminar led by Macquarie University Hospital and Australian Hearing Hub specialists.
The evening was hosted by Professor David McAlpine, Professor of Hearing, Language & the Brain, and Director of Hearing Research at Macquarie University. The specialists included:
- Associate Professor Catherine Birman, specialist adult and paediatric cochlear implant surgeon, otologist, and paediatric ENT surgeon with the Department of ENT at Macquarie University Hospital
- Dr Nicholas Jufas, specialist adult & paediatric ENT surgeon, cochlear and hearing implant surgeon and otology, neurotology & lateral skull base surgeon
- Associate Professor Catherine McMahon, Director of Audiology and Director of the Centre for Implementation of Hearing Research, Macquarie University
- Mr Phillip Nakad, Clinical Audiologist, Macquarie University Speech and Hearing Clinic
The four key learning outcomes of this education seminar included:
- Identify implantable hearing devices and their uses in children and adults with hearing loss
- Evaluate minimally invasive endoscopic ear surgery and its use in people with hearing loss
- Identify hearing loss in infants and adults, and the main referral pathways
- Define, assess and manage clinically significant tinnitus
This education seminar was accredited by continued professional development (CPD) through the RACGP GPs and specialists program.
